Racers Ride The Roval

The high banks of the Auto Club Speedway hosted some fast action at the fourth round of the 2010 Redline Time Attack Series. The action on the track was intense to say the least. The "roval" configuration uses half of the banked NASCAR oval including the front straight, turns one and two, and part of the back straight before turning into the twisty infield road course. Speeds on the huge super speedway oval exceeded 170 MPH. The high speeds combined with 90-plus degree weather proved disasterous for some unfortunate drivers who collided with tire walls and concrete barriers.
DSPORT Magazine Super Modified Class
In Super Modified, Fontana Nissan's 350Z driven by Mike Cronin Jr. made its first appearance this season along with GST Motorsports. GST Motorsports had a rough weekend in the AWD class, losing an engine in practice on Saturday. The crew worked through the night to get the car running for competition on Sunday but finished in fourth. Brian Lock took COBB Tuning's GT-R to the top in the Super Modified AWD. Cronin finished third overall and at the top in the Super Modified RWD division, ruining the chances for N1 Concepts and driver Andrie Hartanto to claim a perfect season. Tri-Point Engineering's MAZDASPEED3 was victorious with Craig Nagler at the wheel in the FWD class.
Godzilla Dominates
An incredibly fast car that caused quite a stir was the COBB Tuning GT-R. With a change of tires, it also ran in the Modified AWD class, taking home another victory. Not only did this GT-R take the overall Super Modified and Modified Class victories with the two fastest times of the day, but it also took the overall event title and the top spot in the Super Session. Time attack history had been made as this is the first time any team/driver has taken an overall win in two classes.
COBB Tuning Modified Class
In the Modified AWD group, the battle for runner up was waged between James Elterman in the LIC/Takata STI and Cronin Jr. in the Fontana Nissan GT-R. These drivers swapped positions all weekend but in the end, Elterman came out on top with a second-place finish. Carl Rydquist fought to the top of the Modified RWD podium in the City Tire/Hankook Nissan 350Z drift car since his Porsche was recently stolen. Tetsu Fukui was on top of the Modified FWD class in a Honda Civic, reaping a 2.25-second advantage over the class runner up, Clint Boisdeau in the 2009 Street FWD championship-winning Ford Focus.
Buddy Club Street Class
The COBB Tuning team also made an impact in the street group with Cameron Benner winning the AWD and the overall class title in an STI. This was the only Street car to break the 1:50 barrier. The BMW-dominated RWD class got checked by the blistering lap times of 240SX driver Eddie Lim. Boisdeau drove the ABF Motoring MINI Cooper S to the top, on the way to a perfect season in the FWD Class.
Fontana Nissan Enthusiast Class
After some hard luck at Las Vegas, AE Performance's Paul Dentice dominated the Enthusiast Class taking both the Enthusiast overall and RWD wins in the AE Performance 370Z. Roger Hocking took home the win in the Enthusiast AWD behind the wheel of the Robispec Mitsubishi EVO. He finished ahead of DSPORT Magazine's EVO driven by Robert Choo. FWD winner Michael Chang was 0.395 seconds away from breaking the 2 minute barrier in his Honda Civic.
